It offers amazing villas within beautiful natural surroundings, a good range of basic local amenities, and so many things to do and admire. Besides, Andratx is only about 28km away from the capital Palma. The quality of life is extremely high in Andratx. Therefore, it’s not surprising that it comes with a price. You have to pay for it. But the number of options you can choose from are interesting: villas, houses, apartments, we have it all.

Andratx is a hotspot for people that want to live their best life. It especially attracts buyers who are interested in modern architecture, high quality of life, sea view, and of course the traditional Mallorca vibe. Andratx offers you an attractive mix of being very traditional whilst offering great cuisine and luxury shopping opportunities as well. Also, from Andratx, you can easily explore the South-West locations of Mallorca.

Why are the natural surroundings worth mentioning? Because there’s mountains, forest, valleys, and coastal scenery. Especially when you live in the stylish Port Andratx you could get properties with amazing sea views. This picturesque setting is located about 5km away from Andratx town. People even tell that Port Andratx is the loveliest harbour in the Mediterranean! This makes sense, as you can admire many stunning and well-maintained yachts, as well as the beautiful beach and mountain setting. The yacht club offers more than 450 berths, so plenty of room to store your yacht too.

Even though Port Andratx can give you a luxurious feel, it’s still a working fishing port. When you take place at one of the many bars and cafés you can have beautiful and relaxing views on the port, and watch some of the daily maritime life happening too. The vibe is very relaxing and the place has a sub-tropical feeling thanks to its almond trees and mines. Moreover, in Andratx, you will experience the shade of Puig de Galatzó. This is the high point of the mountain range Serra de Tramuntana.

The rich history of Andratx

Andratx was once called Andrachium by the Romans in the 2nd century BC. And if you are wondering why Andratx is built more inland: This is because of the frequent attacks of pirates. This is why you’ll see the multiple famous watchtowers which were part of the defence system that was built all along the coastline. These are currently one of the main tourist attractions. Interesting to know is that once Andratx used to be a quiet community. Nowadays, it’s inhabited by many people who came overseas or by plane to settle here. Besides, most of the inhabitants of Andratx were originally settled on the coast. This changed during the 15th century when people were pushed inland in search of safer places.

You can still find artefacts, pottery, and coins that date back to the 2nd century. And if you’re into historic buildings, you can admire the church of Santa Maria de Andratx, the Church of S’Arracó, or the Castell de Son Mas which is now the City Hall. You can also visit the ruins of a former Trappist monastery called La Trappa. Andratx was a well-known place of different food productions, such as oranges, olives and grapes, almonds and local crops. Once Peter Kerr wrote some amusing books, Andratx started to become more famous. Selina Scott, a British TV presenter, also wrote a book about her experiences in this area. Since the 1960s, tourism has been on the rise. The area rapidly changed into one of the most important tourist areas of the island.

Among 43% of the residents are EU nationals, with roughly 15% British, 10% French, and 15% German. You can tell that lots of people worldwide came to this place to settle here forever. So, what can you do in Andratx when you live there? There are lots of excellent activities to do. You can learn, explore, be active, or relax – depending on what you feel like doing.

Andratx Golf

First, I want to start with the famous golfing experience in Andratx. It is one of the most challenging golf courses in Mallorca! The 6th hole is interesting, as with 609 meters this is the longest hole in Spain. During this golf course, you get spectacular views of the surrounding hills and the bay in Camp de Mar. And all of this whilst you golf in the finest quality of white sand, fairly narrow fairways, and seven lakes that are utilized over six holes. By the way, the golf course Andratx is designed by the famous Gleneagles resort in Scotland!

Boat trip adventure!

And if you’re in for an adventure: you could visit Sa Dragonera on a boat trip. This is an uninhabited islet close to Port Andratx that belongs to the municipality of Andratx. The name Sa Dragnera is based on a Dragon due to its unique shape which looks like the back of a Dragon. There are rare species to find, such as a rare colony of Eleonora’s falcons. It’s a great idea to combine this trip with snorkelling and scuba diving, too. The underwater world is so beautiful there and you have the chance to spot fish you’ve never seen before. Also, you will spot many lizards and pirate towers.

Historic & Cultural

Looking for something more historic or cultural? Then you can visit a castle, church., or a museum. For example, take Castle Son Mas. It gives you a medieval feel and its defence tower that dates back to the 16th century gives you a sense of the multiple attacks by pirates. This castle still rules over Andratx as it is located on top of the hill. The city hall shows an interesting botanic garden and there are even important paintings housed there of Durer and Tintoretto. And if you’re interested in visiting a church, then take a visit to Santa Maria de Andratx. Founded in 1248, this church is an amazing piece of architecture with of course also a defence tower that helped against those pirate attacks.

I also can’t forget mentioning CCA Andratx which is one of the largest centres of Contemporary Art in the Balearic Islands and Europe as well!  For a unique cultural experience, the CCA Andratx is a must-visit. It was founded in 2001 and the building is 4000 square metres big. The style and architecture are traditional and perfectly integrated into the breathtaking natural scenery of its surroundings. So if you’re an art lover, do yourself a favour and go to CCA Andratx. The building is stunning, the welcome is warm, the art is breathtaking. Enjoy the best of international contemporary art here!

Being active in the outdoor

Want something more active in the outdoor? Then it’s good to know that Andratx is an excellent place for sailing, too. Port Andratx offers a full range of sailing experiences. Moreover, Andratx has beautiful hiking routes for both beginners and more experienced hikers which require an alpine experience. Make sure to bring sturdy shoes because this can make or break your hiking trip. You can also choose to go cycling of course and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Andratx. Furthermore, there are plenty of water activities to experience. For example, you can hire ocean bikes, do stand up paddleboarding, hire a fast boat, and more.

Events in Andratx

A typical event in Andratx will be the lively local market, which takes place every Wednesday morning. People say that the Andratx market is a hidden gem. You can taste the most authentic Spanish food, and find a mix of pottery, fresh fruit, sunglasses, cheese, jewellery, souvenirs, lots of leather goods, clothing and much more. It is also a nice opportunity to talk with the locals. And are you in for wine tasting? If you like wine, then this is something you can’t ignore doing.
