Living in Costa del Sol – Ultimate Guide

Post image

Are you rethinking where you want to live? Well, then it’s time you meet Costa del Sol, which is a 300km long area on the Spanish coast of the Mediterranean sea. With its sunny climate, it’s a great area to live in – especially for those who work online. Costa del Sol is famous for its beaches with their unique style and atmosphere. The stretches of sand are usually the only thing they have in common. Furthermore, living in Costa del Sol means that you can profit from healthy Mediterranean cuisine and a relaxing lifestyle. No surprise why Costa del Sol attracts new visitors and residents every single year.

Even though Costa del Sol means an easy-going lifestyle, it doesn’t mean it’s not lively. If you want you can participate in all kinds of fabulous attractions and a lively nightlife scene. And going to these hot restaurants is an experience you want to repeat. Costa del Sol is one of the most loved places in Europe to move into. With its many sunny days, and only three months of coldish weather and 2 months of really warm weather around 35 degrees, a lot of residents – especially those who came here from other places in Europe – agree that you can have an enjoyable life in Costa del Sol.

A snowy ski resort in Costa Del sol!

What a lot of people usually don’t know or forget, is that you can find a snowy mountain range close to Costa del Sol. It only takes about 2 hours or less to reach Europe’s most southern ski resort named the Sierra Nevada. Thanks to the high peaks it’s made possible to ski in an area along the Mediterranean sea. It even has one of the longest ski seasons in Europe as it usually ends in May. The Sierra Nevada means snowing mountain range and this is understandable as the area gets lots of snow, especially in the Northern and Central parts of the mountain range. Parts of the Sierra Nevada are included in the Sierra Nevada National Park.

Costa del Sol beaches and lakes

Besides the beaches, Costa of Living also has many lakes that are nice to live at. During the summer months, the water gets nice and warm. Anyway, you will find out that every single beach is different in its own atmosphere and in what it has to offer. Some have waves whereas other ones don’t. Additionally, there are both sandy and pebbled beaches, beaches for naturalists, beaches with clubs or secluded coves that you’ll completely have for yourself.

This can play a role in your decision of planning a trip to Costa del Sol, whether it’s permanent or as a holiday, especially for those who are with children. Shallow waves are more family-friendly than a wild beach where you can take advantage of some watersport activities. No matter the kinds of water activities you’re looking for, Costa del Sol has it all. It even has tens of beaches that earned the Blue Flag, which stands for details such as excellent water quality, great facilities, and a clean beach.

These are the things you can do on the Costa del Sol beaches (and lakes):

  • Rock climbing
  • Swimming in both the lakes and beaches
  • Kayaking
  • Snorkelling
  • Boating
  • Kite-surfing
  • Parasailing
  • Diving
  • Water skiing
  • And even dolphin watching.

There’s much more to do in Costa del Sol but what we can ensure you, is that the water-lover will love this area.

How do the areas in Costa del Sol differ?

There’s one thing that all the areas in Costa del Sol have in common: a great climate all year round, a lot to do and to see, and experiencing the beauty of every beach. The area of Costa del Sol stretches horizontally, meaning that it stretches from east to west, we will split the area into 3 areas: east, central, and west.

East of Costa del Sol

The east of Costa del Sol is the most tranquil area of Costa del Sol. This is because the area is lesser-known and not as good developed as the other parts of Costa del Sol. So if you’re looking for a more quiet space, you can move to somewhere in the east. For example, the east of Malaga is usually very quiet. Still, there are some popular resorts named Torre del Mar, Nerja, and Torrox.

Central area of Costa del Sol

There are many options in the central area of Costa del Sol. Do you prefer a city, a village, or to be right on the beach or in the countryside? It’s up to you to decide. The central area of Costa del Sol is the most developed part and is located in between Malaga and Marbella. You can find popular resorts here such as Torremolinos, Benalmadena, Mijas Costa, and Fuengirola. This area started to attract mass tourism in the 1960s.

West of Costa del Sol

The west part of Costa del Sol is home to the most luxurious real estate and resorts. Think about the Marbella Golden Mile, La Zagaleta, and Puerto Banus which are only situated here. The west of Costa del Sol is located between Marbella and Sotogrande, with lots of resorts.

For who is living in Costa del Sol most suitable?

Living in Costa del Sol is most suitable for those who earn their income somewhere else, or those who don’t seek or need a job. This is because finding a job in this area could be harder than in other parts of Europe. Certain sectors will always do better such as the IT sector and of course the hospitality sector, and there can always be a way to find work, but when you’d like to live in the beautiful resort areas of Costa del Sol it’s best if you are financially independent. Then you can enjoy the best of living in Costa del Sol which gives you a high quality of life with an excellent outdoor lifestyle.

Cost of living in Costa del Sol

Living in Spain means living in houses that can offer you more value for money compared to other houses in Europe. Usually, you will get more value for money as the Spanish villas are more elegant, bigger, and bring the word luxury to a completely new level. However, there’s still a difference in where you live. Because if you live in touristy areas or right on the beach in a popular area, then you will usually pay more as these areas are very favourable. But isn’t it worth the money to also pay somewhat extra for the surroundings and a higher quality of life?

Compared to western European countries, Costa del Sol is relatively cheap. Many restaurants won’t blow your wallet so it’s easy to regularly get a glass of wine to enjoy in the sun. Compared to the other famous area Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol is more upscale which means that its attractions are more catering to the wealthier people. Properties in Costa del Sol are notoriously more expensive than in Costa Blanca. However, Costa del Sol is still an excellent investment as it’s an area that’s in high demand – which is what we experienced too over the past years.

Sotogrande Golf

Are you a lover of golf? Well, even if you aren’t you will love this – even if it’s just because of its wonderful surroundings. The world-famous Valderrama course is situated in Sotogrande, which was founded in 1964 by Robert Trent Jones. He completely designed the golf club, and it’s named ‘Real Club de Golf Sotogrande’. The best golfers have been to this golf course and it will make you feel like you’re a champion among champions. By the way, this golf course is even voted to be one of the ten golf courses in Europe.

This has everything to do with the perfect and well-maintained landscape, the variety of holes, and the giant palm trees that enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings. Besides, you will find cork oaks, eucalyptus, and mature vegetation with pine trees. All within an excellent climate and the close beauty of the sea. Try and get your best swing at the Real Club de Golf Sotogrande or at the other amazing golf courses that Sotogrande has to offer!

Torreguadiaro beach

We can’t skip the Torreguadiaro beach, as this is one of the most visited beaches of Sotogrande. It is situated in between the cosmopolitan village of Torreguadiaro with its excellent tapas bars and restaurants, and the glamorous port of Sotogrande. Besides, this beach is famous all over Spain because of its golden sand mixed with tiny pebbles. Therefore, it’s called Playa de las Conchas as well which stands for beach of the shells. It offers spectacular views and a wide range of entertainment. The beach is well-maintained and clean too, and there’s a nice beach club with a bar and loungers.

The food in Sotogrande

In such an exclusive area, there must be great food, isn’t it? That’s very true. No matter if you’re looking for Asian, local, or continental food you will have a wide variety of food options in Sotogrande. What about trying lobster rice, black rice, fideua, arroces caldosos and more? We highly recommend eating at the Sotogrande Marina. Estepona

Estepona is what you can truly call love at first sight. It’s more than a fantastic place to live and offers very special activities that no other area in the Costa del Sol can match. With all-year-round sunshine and 2 beaches that earned a Blue Flag, it attracts more tourists and residents every year. A Blue Flag, by the way, is earned when a beach has excellent water quality, is very clean, and has great facilities. Estepona is part of the well-known Golden Triangle which stands for the most affluent communities and thus the exclusive areas of the Costa del Sol.

With Benahavis to the North and Marbella to the east, Estepona is nicely located in between wonderful areas. Estepona has a main town and a coastal area, which stretches from San Pedro to beyond the town boundary. It’s a large area, and a city and municipality in the Spanish province Málaga. There are three main areas in the heart of Estepona and these are a big reason why the place is loved so much. Firstly, it is the amazing Blue Flag beach with a lovely promenade. Secondly, it’s the marina, and thirdly, it’s the old town that’s full of charm.

Estepona town

Alcazaba Lagoon: The first crystal lagoon in Europe!

We talked about very special activities before, and we’re going to mention one of them here. This is the Alcazaba Lagoon which is the first crystal lagoon in Europe! It is a man-made huge expanse of water, that’s ideal for swimming and non-motorized water sports. This makes it a paradise for watersport lovers. You can do sailing, surfing, canoeing, and more. Properties (apartments) are built around this place with a remarkable design.

Estepona’s three main areas explained

The marina is a great place to hang out. And even though there are no special designer shops, there are quite a few restaurants and bars. You will also find a market at the weekend which is very popular among locals, expats, and tourists. The promenade itself nearby the peach is fantastic with, of course, lots of bars and restaurants. People love to walk or cycle here – even if it’s just for a break. When you get there on a clear day, you have a chance to look beyond the Gibraltar Rock and spot some more distant land. the old town of Estepona is very authentic, and more traditional and Spanish compared to other areas in the Costa del Sol.

A secret within Estepona is called the Laguna Village. It’s a beach club area with a selection of bars, some boutiques, and great restaurants. A beach club named Puro Beach is known as the best on this coast. But besides doing some active partying, you can spend a great day by hiring a sunbed or getting a nice lunch, for example. It’s only 6 minutes away from the Estepona centre when you walk along the new golden mile. This area is known for its abundance of 5-star luxury hotels and resorts, golf clubs like the Estepona Golf, and amenities. A great hotel to get your Saturday brunch for example. Is the Kempinski hotel.

Investments in Estepona

A lot of money goes into Estepona. And we’re not only talking about investments in properties here. No, even central and local governments invest their money in Estepona to host new amenities. Think about museums, an athletic stadium that’s now on the northern edge of the city, and investments into the old town. There are even murals in the old town now which makes the town even more beautiful. Furthermore, a hospital was been built, new parks have been created, and multiple communities and sports facilities. It’s great to see that Estepona comes more alive and that it’s only going to rise in beauty over time.

A safari park!

Estepona even has its very own safari park named Selwo Aventura which truly makes the area stand out from the rest. The lions that roar here in the morning even wake up residents sometimes. Besides, there are all kinds of animals you can find on a true safari: giraffes, elephants, flamingos, zebras, cheetahs, and a lot more! The nice green park is well-maintained and they take very good care of the animals. They sit in habitats that are spacious enough and still the park is not big. Within a few hours, you can see all the animals.

It’s very pleasant to walk around here as there’s lots of room for shelter and cooling off. And as it’s located in a mountainous area you will have to climb a little to get what you want, but it’s worth it. You can cool off at some of the showers, water jets or mists.

Orchidarium

Would you like to see beautiful orchids growing in Estepona? Then you can visit the orchidarium named Orquidario de Estepona which is an orchid house and an exciting place to be in. It has a gorgeous collection of tropical plants and orchids. When you’re in Estepona we highly recommend you walk through this. For the ones among us who are mobility challenged: there’s an elevator that can take you there. It’s nicely landscaped with a spectacular waterfall and with always something blooming, it’s more than worth the 3 euros of the entrance fee.

Natural Park Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja

To get breath-taking views of Estepona and beyond, you can hike in Natural Park Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja. It’s a long name, right? It’s an amazing hiking area. This beautiful forest and the mountainous area has lots of easy footpaths all around and wonderful fauna to discover. You can find it just an hour’s drive away from Estepona. The only way to get here is by car – well, you can cycle up there, but we don’t recommend it. The average height of this park is 1,000m with the highest point being 1,450. So, spectacular views guaranteed.

Eating Paella in Estepona

When you are in Estepona you can’t skip on their excellent gastronomy. One of the most famous dishes to eat in the coastal areas is Paella, which is a classic Spanish rice dish. It’s made with vegetables, chicken, rice, saffron, and seafood cooked and served in one pan. It has an intense flavour as it uniquely doubles or even triples volume within sticking or opening during cooking. You will get a little taste of the ocean as well thanks to the seafood inside. Usually, they use prawns, squid, clams, and mussels. Interested? Then head over to Taberna Miguel in Estepona for a spectacular feast for both your eyes and palate.

Marbella

We want to give you one warning before you go to Marbella. And this is: once you’re there, you probably don’t want to leave. Located in the east of the Costa del Sol which is known as the more tranquil part, Marbella is a pure gem. It’s situated in the province Malaga and is rich in history. All around the old town you find wonderful Renaissance-style architecture from the 16th century. Additionally, the city walls around Marbella come from the Arabian occupation. With pleasant weather all year round and a lovely sandy beach, it’s a fantastic place to live whether you’re retiring or moving with the family.

The marina is Marbella’s crown, and only the most expensive and beautiful yachts are situated here. A berth here can cost around 500,000 euros per square meter! Marbella is perfect for living the high life in your luxury villa whilst you can enjoy the sun and the beach together with the stunning yachts. Life is easy-going in Marbella and the people living here are very friendly and welcoming. Maybe that’s because of the amazing weather and sea – or because they’re living their best life. There are 320 days of sunlight every year and the average temperature lies around 19 degrees.

Marbella has a 30km long stretch of beaches, with all being different. For example, you can go to Playa de La Venus which is located at the centre of Marbella, or the Artola beach which is a wild beach. They awarded the Blue Flag given by the European Environmental Education Foundation because these beaches are clean, have good facilities, and have excellent water quality.

marbella real estate

A wonderful position

Marbella has a lucky position in the Costa del Sol as it’s protected from harsher weather conditions by the mountain range Sierra Blanca and the warm Mediterranean. Furthermore, it’s easily accessible thanks to the minibuses and taxis which you can hire at the airport of Malaga. You can also rent a car and drive there, or take a bus from Fuengirola. Even celebrities can confirm that they love Marbella’s position. Marbella is a lovely place for celebrities to stay and explore the area – or to live. And for those who seek a booming nightlife, you can find it in Marbella too.

What to do in Marbella

Sierra Blanca is a mountain range with little vegetation that offers fantastic hiking opportunities. And a fantastic walk through nature is always good. Especially for the nature lovers among us! Think about quiet parks like La Constitución and La Alameda with their many different plants, or Marbella’s unique promenade of 15km which gives you an endless opportunity to walk.

Whether you want to relax, walk the dog, or go for a run: the promenade is a great place to go to and close to your door. And what about enjoying one of the 18-hole golf courses? Marbella is a playground for the wealthy with its abundance of golf courses. Furthermore, you can play in tennis clubs, do horse-riding, visit private beaches and do watersports such as sailing.

The old town Marbella

There’s also the possibility to go by bike or visit the chicest parts of the city. Visiting the old town is beautiful thanks to the typical stone-paved streets, colourful doors, red tiles, and houses in Arabian design. In the whole area, you will find bright flowers and many of the buildings date back to the renaissance. Moreover, Marbella has luxurious stores which stand out because of their high standards and there are street markets where you can find anything you can think of. The streets emerge on little squared like Plaza de Los Naranjos where orange trees are the border of nice restaurants.

This plaza is the heart of the city. The atmosphere is great here and it’s a fantastic place to meet new people. Its cosmopolitan nature combined with festive traditions gives the town a unique, lively feel.

Back to history

And would you like to go back in time? Then you can visit the Castillo named Murallas del Castillo, which dominates the old town of Marbella and still consists of old walls that surrounded the city back in history. Plus, did you know that there’s a museum that’s considered as one of the best of its kind in Spain? This is because it’s the only museum in the country that’s devoted to engraving, named the Spanish Contemporary Engraving Museum. We highly recommend visiting it and the area is a big part of the experience too: a 16th-century Moorish-style palace!

Marbella has several exclusive urbanization resorts. Our properties are situated in the best areas, including the Marbella’s Golden Mile. You can find all kinds of real estate at Baerz & Co. Benahavis

Between Estepona and Marbella and a little inland, you will find Benahavis, located in the mountains. What makes Benahavis special, is that it’s one of the most mountainous villages but still close enough to the resort beaches. There are more than 7340 residents who enjoy their best life in Benahavis. And you can be one of them. The name comes from the Arabic ‘’bin al havis’’ which means ‘’son of havis’’. Havis was a Moorish prince from the 11th century who ruled in the Montemayor Castle. This castle is a spectacular visit with multiple impressive towers that helped in the defence. The town was founded by the Arabs around the fortress to protect the Eastern area.

Benahavis is a typical Andalusian town in the Costa del Sol with a street layout that’s preserved in original form. Moreover, you can witness its glorious past from several monuments. Furthermore, Benahavis is one of the richest municipalities of Spain. This is mainly thanks to the several golf resorts like Los Arqueros and La Quinta. Additionally, you can find the most expensive real estate in Spain in La Zagaleta which is an exclusive fenced estate. Fun to see is that almost all properties here are white.

benahavis properties

The town of Benahavis is small, but the municipality is very large and highly diverse. Natural landscapes like ”Las Angosturas” are a must-visit where the Guadalmedina River passes through. You can hike through numerous mountain ranges, forests and river valleys, or just admire the beauty of the natural surroundings which makes Benahavis probably one of the most beautiful places on the Costa del Sol. Because of its location in the mountains, the temperatures in winter are usually lower and warmer in summer compared to Marbella and Estepona.

The dining room of Costa del Sol

A fun fact is that Benahavis is also called the dining room of Costa del Sol. This starts to make sense as it offers excellent international cuisines. And the choice and variety of cuisine are unparalleled and exceptional. Benahavis also earned the name ‘La Sartén de Andalucia’ which means ‘’the frying pan of Andalucia’’. It serves the best traditional Andalucian cooking. Ingredients of the wide variety of restaurants use locally grown ingredients. A good example of seafood is Flor de Lis and La Torre for their extensive wine list. Or visit El Guarda 1926 which offers generous portions of quality Mediterranean food.

How to get to Benahavis

There are different options to get there. Firstly, you can go from the Malaga International Airport or the Jerez Airport. The closest airport to Benahavis is Gibraltar’s North Front Airport. The infrastructure of Benahavis is excellent as you can go to various national and international destinations, as well as popular areas on the Costa del Sol. Make sure that you don’t touch the pine processionary caterpillar on your way, which is highly toxic for cats, dogs, and small children. You can find these during springtime on the ground.

Benahavis Real Estate

Benahavis real estate is high in demand, as it gives an oasis of tranquillity and peace within easy reach of Marbella. The very low-density construction combined with the natural environment makes it a place that’s highly sought after. There’s a huge number of investors who have put their investments into property developments, which is highly beneficial to the town. Benahavis is the base for lots of foreigners as more than 4500 people are non-Spanish. Our real estate in Benahavis combines comfort with modern style and beautiful sea views. You can even get a property within gated urbanization with 24h security, like Los Flamingos.

Living in Benahavis means getting everything you need for a comfortable life in the mountains, close to the sea, and the wonderful Marbella and Estepona! Let our experts of Bearz & Co help you find your dream property.

Málaga

Welcome to the wonderful province Málaga, a wide area that covers 398 km² and is also known as the central location of the Costa del Sol. The city is dressed in golden beaches and loaded with history. The inviting old town speaks for itself. There’s a big and pretty beach with a large pedestrian area. You can get lost in many alleyways with excellent shopping opportunities. And as with most Spanish cities, there’s a Moorish castle close by situated on a hill with absolutely insane views – especially during sunset.  Furthermore, the surroundings of Malaga are attractive as the places Sevilla and Granada are very popular.

A big bonus of living in Malaga or visiting the great city is that you will be both close to the mountains and the beach so you have the best of both. The beach is only about a 15-minute walk away from the historic centre. It’s supposed to be one of the nicest beaches in all of Spain, if not Europe. Further south or along the coast of Málaga you will find beautiful long stretch, white sandy beaches with clear water that are less crowded than the ones in the city. And have we been told that Málaga is one of the safer cities in Spain?

Malaga real estate

Málaga is a pleasant city

Even during winter Málaga is a pleasant stay in the Costa del Sol as the temperature usually lies between 18 degrees where the sun still shines. You can still sit at the beach and relax or read a book, for example. You won’t even experience its winter there if you compare it to other parts of Spain like Barcelona or Valencia, or other places in Europe. Furthermore, the Spanish city is full of amazing food, culture, and history. People here are very friendly and there are Andalusian festivals too which make the area a more lively place to be.

Málaga also offers an excellent travel connection thanks to its very new and modern airport. You can travel to all kinds of destinations within Europe and Spain itself, or take the train from Malaga directly to your terminal.
